Touching songwriting can often paint vivid pictures in the mind. Words written by someone you’ve never met that strike a chord and transport you to meaningful moments in your life.

When I hear the lyrics above, a part of my brain lights up that has been dimly lit for quite some time. Fond memories of playing with my parents as a child come flooding back. I see myself giggling until my cheeks hurt, and wholly connecting with the two people who brought me into this world.

This verse is part of Naarm/Melbourne-based artist Tilly Vickers Willis’ new track, “Circuit”, which is out today. Made up of violins that tug the heartstrings, delicate piano strokes and Tilly’s celestial vocal prowess, “Circuit” is a single designed to carry whatever meaning you give it.

Accompanying the track is an intriguing video directed by the singer-songwriter and Jyo Miyaji. A continuous, tightly-framed shot of Tilly performing, coated with crowd-sourced home footage, scanned and further degraded through VHS by Thomas Molan (icarus.projects). Throughout, glimpses of Tilly’s childhood, trips abroad, and unplaceable shots from nature whisk by.

Of the video, Tilly tells, “As the first piece of finished art from the album, I wanted the video to be direct and poignant”. The warped, superimposed video style, which centres different voyeurs, plays upon the song’s exploration of giving and receiving as lifeforce, echoing the opening lyrics: “One running conversation/one endless back and forth/talking to you is maybe/why I learnt to talk”’.

This LP she speaks of, titled Silver Haide Film, serves as Tilly’s shield against life’s chaos—a chance to respond to all those who have passed into her orbit and had influence, be it good or bad.  Inspired by revered songwriters such as Beck, Suzanne Vega, and Françoise Hardy, Tilly, like them, strives to bring meaning to her life and those within it through musicality.

“Circuit” is a new fact-finding mission, a sonic expression that leaves an indelible mark.
