Childhood crushes stick around. I can barely remember what I had for dinner last night, yet the feelings I had for a girl over 25 years ago are as clear as day. Recalling the thrill of holding hands for the first time still triggers something comforting.

Hailing from Eugene, Oregon, brothers Dana and Alden have just released their latest bop that encapsulates this very emotion. “Childhood Crush” ft. Cinya Khan is a total swooner. Built on sturdy bass licks and Cinya’s anxiety-alleviating vocals, the track is a blueprint for those looking to write powerful indie pop. The flow of it all has major Thundercat energy, uber romantic and oh so effortless.

Speaking on the song’s development, the brothers share:

“‘Childhood Crush’ is the fleeting feeling of liking someone in your adolescence and then watching them ascend to stardom. We played this driving G-funk groove, and Cinya weaved through the layers with her silky voice. The saxophone floats around the song responding to the narration almost like the crush is reacting to her words.”

This new tune is part of Dana and Alden’s soon-to-arrive Speedo album (out June 27 via Concord Jazz). Crazily, the entire LP was written over just 2 weeks in Lisbon, Portugal. Bunkered down in a studio in the bustling port city, Dana, Alden and close collaborator Charif Megarbane experimented with novel sounds and found a sweet spot. Although still steeped in jazz, Speedo intentionally burrows down rabbit holes of funk, indie-rock, hip-hop and more. The full-length arrives in just over a fortnight, and the two smiley musicians are off to tour it throughout Europe in July.
