“Ripe Fields” isn’t a track for the spotlight; it’s one for kicking back under a blanket of nostalgia. The contrast is a part of its charm, given Sam is better known for writing heaters that turn dancefloors all the way up! None larger than “Breather”, his collaboration with Dutchman Chris Stussy.
The track lies on Sam’s latest release, Drives Vol 2, a smattering of songs that have been: “languishing on hard drives for years. I thought it would be nice to make a second compilation, as this one overall sounds a little more warm and soulful than the first volume.”
Both volumes, Sam explains, are a direct challenge to his pesky perfectionism. “At times, I struggle to believe in my music. I will be so quick to discard projects that I’m now learning would be much better shared instead.”
And after making my way through the 20-plus tracks spread across both compilations, it’s a wonder why Sam ever thought these were better off collecting dust. Step into the golden expanse below.
