Even after almost a decade living in London, the seemly never ending summer nights of June never cease to captivate me.
As the solstice approaches and the sunset lingers in the sky for hours, accented by plumes of candy floss clouds and the wispy contrails of planes gone by, it’s hard not to get swept up in the intoxicating energy of a city finally unshackled from its winter months.
Cycling through local neighbourhoods on these days gives a flavour of London’s uniquely diverse cultural landscape and its unification, through the spontaneity that emerges from the blessing of evenings that require nothing more than a t-shirt and an adventurous spirit. Shadeless stretches of parks become prime real estate, whilst pubs spill into the street as just about everywhere feels like an unofficial beer garden for the local revellers.
As the sun finally dips behind buildings that become an urban silhouette that’ll backdrop the night ahead, the sounds of the city begin to pulse in unison. The percussive clatter of people navigating the streets at dusk, in anticipation of the night ahead, morphs into the oozing waves emanating from sound systems coming to life. Energy builds as the sky fades to black.
It’s these elongated evenings that inspired this mix. A journey through the nightlife environments I’ve traversed over my years in London, from canal boats and basements, to forgotten railway arches and forest raves. This mix hopefully evokes some of the sensations of a long night unfolding.
