It’s an age old saying, but life does move too fast. One of the pitfalls of our lives rushing by is that we forget about remarkable creations from times past–there’s always something new to listen to, engage with, or observe.
Last week, I enjoyed a brief reprieve from being drawn into the latest shiny thing and turned my thoughts, or shall I say ears, back to a jazzy house jam that deserves its time in the sun…once more!
“Joe’s Gruv Juuc” is merry keyboard-laden dance music as it should be! The song was produced by Niles Cooper (Niels Kroer), an artist from Aalborg in northwest Denmark, back in 2016.
Imagine Denmark caught in the grip of a harsh winter nearly a decade ago. A young Niels sits at his computer during the Christmas holidays, eager to write something that will bring warmth and positivity to his bitter surroundings. As Niels tells me, “The end of December can be pretty dark and gloomy here, so when I came across the sample from The Crusaders’ track My Lady I knew I had to give it a go.”
“Joe’s Gruv Jucc” isn’t super technical, and Niels is the first to admit that, but it’s proof of the power of simplicity. It literally isn’t trying too hard.
“All I did was cut up the sample, added some drums and beefed up the bass, it’s just a little feel-good sample house thing. All praise should go to Joe Sample (aptly named), he’s the one playing those magic keys”
I can’t help but grin widely when I play this loudly. Echoed snares, a thick kick drum, and cheeky horns get things rolling before Joe Sample’s key strokes shine. The song carries you away with glee before it drops down into a crackling spoken word of Joe marvelling at the cloud formations in Houston, Texas, and how he visualises them while writing music and playing piano. From there, we head back to regular programming carried away by a jazz inferno.
Try your hardest not to enjoy this one. I doubt you’ll get anywhere. Take flight to “Joe’s Gruv Juuc” below.
