Dev Hynes is back. After a two-year hiatus, the man who calls himself Blood Orange has gifted us a new EP. Appropriately titled, Four Songs is the Blood Orange we know and love. Fuzzed out, sultry and stunningly produced.

‘Wish’ is the one we keep playing over and over. Founded on soft snares and hazy synths, Hynes has crafted a record that’s purpose-built for car rides. We’re talking about those trips where you’re driving on auto-pilot and your mind’s in far-off places.

Hynes’s falsetto cascades over the deliberately minimal production, as he sings about how he wishes his failures would drift off into nothingness. There’s an authentic feeling to ‘Wish’, it’s gritty, moody and honest.

I can’t help but think of a guy behind the wheel at night as he drives home after having his heart broken. It’s a winding road and there are tears streaming from his eyes but no sounds of sorrow.

If you were wondering, it was soundtracks and film scores that kept this talented New York local busy for 48 months. Some of his credits include Luca Guadagnino’s We Are Who We Are, A24’s road movie Queen and Slim and HBO’s Drama series In Treatment. Back in 2020, Hynes told Another Man Magazine that his third studio album was all done, meaning there’s plenty to look forward to.
