Egyptian/Australian producer moktar (Moktar Sharouny) is in a generous mood.

Last week, the Syd/Eora local released a surprise on SoundCloud and Bandcamp in the form of “look” — an Arabic-leaning hammer. Interestingly, its original iteration was intended for Baby Keem’s (yes, Kendrick Lamar’s cousin) upcoming Casino album.

“Keem didn’t end up using it, so I started tweaking it and playing around with it for myself,” Mok tells me over IG DMs.

Thank god it didn’t end up rotting in Mok’s hard drive graveyard, is all I can say.

“look” announces itself in a big way — chopped cries meet darbuka hits and human barks that lock you into a head-nod . I’m immediately reminded of Hamdi’s beast “Swing King”, a track that is similarly pure hype.

Born in Cairo, moktar strives to fuse the sounds of his ancestors with modern club production. You only need to tune into the track’s middle stretch, where it slips into a glitchy, destructive space as Mok meddles with hardware, whipping up a short storm.
