I’m a religious listener of Shanti Celeste’s monthly NTS Radio show.
For the first hour, Shanti spins tunes she’s currently rocking with—forever full of bounce and hypnotic rhythms. For the second hour, she invites a friend or someone she admires to take the controls. However, on some occasions, Shanti will simply go back-to-back with her guest for 120 minutes.
And this is how I discovered San Franciscan Sinéad (Sinéad Jonaidi). Often Shanti will pepper her show with chatter but on this episode, the two ladies barely say a word to one another as they go tit for tat filling the airwaves with delectable house music. You can literally hear how locked in they are, as one record melts into the next. For me, this is what gives a DJ mix that something extra, knowing those performing are having a ball!
Just a few weeks later, Sinéad is our 16th guest on TROVE. The Internet does have its perks.
Sinéad is of Irish and Iranian heritage. Wet basslines and dreamy femme melodies define her sound. The punchy, fervent tracks she chooses demand that listeners dance.
When I chatted with Sinéad, she had just landed back home from her first tour since 2023. As she tells me, “I took a bit of a break from gigging internationally…I was finding it hard to manage my overall health and all the anxiety that comes with DJing”.
A tempting offer by the team behind Love International brought Sinéad to the Adriatic coast of Croatia and back on the global circuit. Listen to the superbly summery recording of what she lay down HERE. I was glad to hear this particular tour was one of joy and didn’t weigh heavy on her mental health.
Sinéad proudly wears the badge of resident at the beautiful Public Records in New York City. She is currently working with their team to curate all-female takeovers at the club. “We’re talking all three rooms, The Sound Room, The Atrium and The Upstairs listening bar all stacked with women DJs”
Empowering women in dance music has always been in Sinéad’s genes. Back in San Francisco, she ran a popular gal’s night called Metropolis, and from the looks of things, she will never stop waving that flag.
“I hope to create a space to spotlight women like myself who have put in the time, dig deep and really care about their craft”.
Of all those we’ve featured in this series, Sinéad comes close to the perfect guest. Why? Because of statements like this:
“I consider myself a “digger” or “sharer” of music. While I enjoy the act of DJ’ing my true joy comes from finding music – and thus playing it for others. I love sharing Track IDs and sending folders of music to friends. It’s almost like cooking a meal for those you care about and watching them enjoy it.”
If you have heard any of my sets as of recently – almost all of them include a Hipp-e & Halo track (if not multiple). Tech House from the West Coast has become really popular over the last couple of years, but for me, it’s very nostalgic. I “grew up” going to outdoor parties in San Francisco which shaped this sound from the 90’s/ 2000’s. Lots of drums, wiggles and some funky elements. Pair that with a stacked sound system outside on some grass under the sun.. nothing better.
This is one of my favourite tribal tech house rollers. Moody B is from Canada, and, if I had to guess, somewhere on the West Coast based on his productions. This is a perfect builder and I just love all the trippy phaser elements this track has. Absolute beaut!
I found this one digging online. It feels like a perfect combination of all the things I look for in a track: bouncy, groovy, with some lyrical elements and a bit of an edge. I have to admit I paid a pretty penny for this one… but I had to have it!! The other track on this with Phat People is also a big techno banger.
I actually just found this one from the prolific Hooj Chunes label. The discography is so big that I still don’t think I have scratched the surface. I haven’t had a chance yet to play this one out, but I imagine it would fit perfectly in a long set as the sun is coming up. It’s tripped out, euphoric, and soothing.
I found this awhile back but have yet to play it. I love the way the vocals are sampled in this, as well as the wonky and edgy keys as it builds up. It’s definitely a deep builder. I love when I get to play these emotional and contemplative-type tracks.
