Descriptions & Selections By DJ Popup

Born and raised in beautiful Copenhagen, our next TROVE guest is a slept-on selector who blends spritely house and other oddities. The man we speak of goes by DJ Popup.
After picking up the drums at age 11, it wasn’t until his best friend snuck him into a club—where Danish powerhouses C.K. and Optic were playing as 2 Bit Crew that he became transfixed by club music. From there, it was a slippery slope as Popup immersed himself in the sounds coming out of the eastern city of Aarhus. Before long, he had forged close bonds with those running imprints in the region, including Regelbau, PRS, and Safe Distribution.
“Their creativity, kindness, and dear friendship played a big role in my musical upbringing.”
Years later, inspired by his social circle, Popup launched his own label, NES, which he describes as “somewhere to simply release music that I love and appreciate.”
Listening to DJ Popup is like sipping a drink so zesty, it fizzes over the rim. His five TROVE picks are no different–venturing through early 90’s American House, squelchy dub groovers and smooth tech house from the dawn of the new millennium.
As always, if you can’t live without his selections, be sure to grab them via Bandcamp and support the artists.
I found this on my dad’s friend’s MTV Clublounge CD many years ago. I never get tired of its understated and super groovy vibe.
Okay… hands down, this is my most played record. David Anthony, I love your music. Thank you for being a total original and putting my kind of soul into club music.
I get goosebumps every time I put this one on. It’s so much fun, and everyone I’ve shared it with on a dance floor seems to start smiling. Wonder why??
Dave Lalla was an inspirational producer; check him out! For some reason, listening to and playing this song gives me a lot of creative confidence. There are absolutely no F***s given here.
Slide is a really, really dope label. Their sound is very inspiring and original in my opinion. I’m lucky enough to have copped a few of them, especially this one. I never DJ without it.
This screams my friend T&T (Track & Trace), and makes me want to jam with them again. It’s just straight-up fun to listen to. To sit back and let it evolve, it’s almost healing.
