Ever since Syd/Eora producer Soul Wun (Blake Carthew) released his maiden record Blue Light on November 8 (via Gallery Recordings) talk of its powers has grown stronger and stronger. The album is a culmination of gorgeous sounds from a range of music worlds including breakbeat, jungle, symphony and electronica. For most, melding this myriad of genres would be a hill too steep to climb but Soul Wun has delivered in spades.

Not only is the instrumentation and production superbly tight, but each song is attached to a particular moment of struggle or triumph Blake has endured over the last few years. Listen to Blue Light from wall to wall, it only makes sense that way.

After hearing the album, we thought I wonder what other audio Blake drinks in? And for that, there’s TROVE 012. If you’re vibing his selections – head over to Bandcamp and spend a few pennies to support those who wrote them.

1. Mr Monday | “Appreciate”

I heard this track in a Doc Jay mix and haven’t looked back. I’ve spent the last few months so excited to play this one out this summer.  The ‘Think About It’ break is a no-brainer for me. Each layer comes in so strong and by the time the vocal hits it’s pandemonium.

2. Wind | “Luxury”

Italy in 1983 must’ve been crazy. Chugging bassline… String stabs… Big snares… The baritone vocal call juxtaposed with the high response is wild. A track reserved for the heads (from experience playing out – last time sort of cleared the floor haha) Perfect track.

3. G.F.X | “Eternal”

This track was originally released in 1990 by G.F.X. and earned cult status before disappearing like so many other great tracks of that era. Thankfully it was recently reissued by my guy Adam (REES) over at Magic Ritmo. The story of this track is long and worth a read. Big love to Adam and Geoff.

4. Sunscream | “Far Away”

I see Public Possession I buy. I’ve been deep-diving into a downtempo realm and this one is by far on top of that list. It’s hard work to make a track with so few elements. Each component holds its own – tied so perfectly together by that vocal + pan flute sample.

5. Captain Hollywood Project | “All I Want” (Naked Eye Mix)

Damn, this is just so nice. Perfect late afternoon/ sunset out in the bush tune. The repitched / reprogrammed classic pan flute is just so good. The sexy monotone vocal followed by the chorus and keys – one of my favourites at the moment for sure.
