TROVE 007 | San Soda

In 2019, I had one of the funnest club nights of my life with San Soda (Nicolas Geysens) and my brother Maxim Troch.

It was the JAW Weekender at the now-defunct Griessmuhle in Berlin with a bill that included Theo Parrish, Marcellus Pittmann, Specter, Max Graef and San Soda himself.

This lineup was brilliant because it was full of artists who weren’t afraid to throw musical curveballs, something this Belgian has been known for his whole career. I won’t harp on too much but it’s a privilege to have a producer who has graced some of dance music’s biggest stages such as Berghain’s Panorama Bar, Dekmantel Selectors and HORST send us 5 tracks that have moved him recently.

1. Lars Bartkhun | “First Kalimba”

I have always been an admirer of his music, and with this latest album, it truly feels like the culmination of all his production and composition talents.

2. Konkolo Orchestra | “Blue G” ft. Nongoma

This kind of modern-sounding Afrobeat often finds its way into my sets, there’s more great tracks on the album but this one is the dance floor killer that always puts a smile on people’s faces.

3. The Ghostwriters | “Rococco Rondo”

Only got on to this version after hearing Jeremiah Chiu’s version (which is equally great) – a real sound journey with so much happening but still sending out a very contained and fresh energy.

4. Paul St. Hilaire & René Lowe | “Faith” (Vox Mix)

Been reconnecting lately with the dub/dub techno sounds of the 90s and early 00s. Those songs often seem very simple but the more you listen, the more you understand the delicate manipulation and placement of sounds in the frequency spectrum and stereo field. I rarely find this kind of artistry these days where it’s about doing more with less instead of maximising everything.

5. Àbáse | “Home”

Lovely album by Àbáse once again with a mixture of different styles, this jazz piece really resonated with me.
