Sometimes when I listen to music, I can almost hear the sheer joy artists feel while creating together. “That’s My Story,” from New York duo musclecars (Brandon Weems & Craig Handfield), Atlanta mainstay Roland Clark, and Dominican-American producer Toribio (Cesar Toribio), is one of those records.

It opens like a dialogue between jazz and Latin drums, before Roland Clark’s svelte vocal glides in. He laments a string of fleeting romances his heart was never really in, that have left his soul shattered like glass. But now, he’s ready to turn the page and find something true.

For the uninitiated, Roland Clark is an admired producer and vocalist whose CV includes collaborations with Armand Van Helden, Katy Perry, Louie Vega, and plenty more. So it’s no surprise that the musclecars boys were pinching themselves at the chance to work with him on a track. As Craig shares:

“The collaboration between us and Roland came about quite serendipitously, about a year ago, in a studio in Bushwick. It was our first time meeting, but when you listen to someone’s music for so long, you have a pretty good sense of what they can do.”

From a production standpoint, musclecars’ bond with Toribio is Teflon-strong, the result of years spent moving through the same New York circles. The track itself feels like a perfect union of their musical DNA; Roland TR-909s, lively organs, Latin percussion, and that unmistakable pulse of NYC dance culture, an homage to legends like Joe Claussell and Ron Trent. “My boys and I musclecars had been playing with the idea of a joint EP for some time…It was only recently when Bradley Zero tapped musclecars for a release that voila, our EP had a new home. It’s such a pleasure to share something that genuinely presents our influences and is a symbol of our friendship.” – Toribio.

For me, it’s the jubilant gospel energy coursing through “That’s My Story”, an irresistible rhythm and bounce that could coax even the shyest dancers onto the floor. Rhythm Section has been a coveted label in the dance world for nearly 14 years, and Brandon was especially thrilled that Bradley Zero chose them.

“On Rhythm Section nonetheless! I honestly can’t wait for everyone to hear the rest of the project.”

Get acquainted with these gifted lads collectively and in their own right. You won’t be short on sonics to explore.  “That’s My Story” in its entirety below.
