Birdsnake sounds like a callsign to me. The title given to the leader of a fearless team. In this case, however, the name refers to a collective. A Melb/Naarm quartet that creates trippy downtempo music with expert precision.
After hitting the play button on their latest release, “Rare Amulet” (out via Bathtub Music), I felt compelled to share it. The track is cruising across placid waters, but in WAV form. Kickstarting with echoed click clacks and an enchanting harp (played by Genevieve Fry), the group then introduces a power play of synthesisers that envelop the ears. Time-lapse videos of plants growing and flowers blooming come to mind, those high-definition experiences ever-present in nature documentaries.
Speaking to the band, which comprises Winton Findlay, Leon Sebastian, Ayden Thorne, and Jacob Minarelli, “Rare Amulet” is inspired by the patterns created on sand when light refracts through shallow water. Having just returned home from spots scattered throughout the Mediterranean, this phenomenon remains remarkably fresh in my mind. As the tune rolls on, wind chimes and bell tones enter the fray, adding to an already blissful boat ride.
The moment “Rare Amulet” was complete, Birdsnake knew this would be the first taste of new music their fans would hear. An easy-listening gem that sets the scene for what is to come. For those eager to experience this brain rub IRL, the boys will be playing at Hopkins Creek 2025.
