Having worked in the music industry for some time now, I’ve come to realise that the ability to write brilliant tracks is only half the battle–you’ve got to be a good person too. Rino (Rino Darusman) is one of those people.
The Melb/Naarm-based composer is a joy to be around, much like his music. Rino’s electronic productions convey a sense of levity with hints of the natural world sprinkled throughout. As an Indonesian descendant, Rino often incorporates instruments native to Southeast Asia, a refreshing element that sets his work apart from the masses.
Today marks the release of his ‘Running in Pairs’ EP, out via Seb Wildblood’s all my thoughts imprint. A collection of songs inspired by the rush of feeling experienced during a runner’s high, alongside the bond of sharing this moment with another.
“Kitestring” is the third offering and certainly a tune for pounding the pavement. Built on manipulated samples from the Indonesian gamelan mallet (gambang) and an anthemic chord progression, this one truly travels.
As its name suggests, the track continues to gain altitude, buoyed by euphoric thermals. You know that feeling on a run when you’re completely out of breath and feel like giving up… “Kitestring” is your saviour–that kick of fuel to keep you moving. Speaking about it, Rino says, “The title came to mind when making the chord progression as it felt like it was always ascending and taking you with it.”
Once again, Rino has created something both energetic and absorbing —a sonic sprint that perspires dopamine.
