I’ve never been to Japan, let alone to the coastal town of Kashima, but Google Images tells a beautiful story—lush foliage, vibrantly coloured shrines, and serene shorelines.

It’s here that Ryotaro Noshiro’s (OjiAji) story began. The now Melbourne/Naarm-based artist recalls a childhood enriched by the smarts and fortitude of the women in his family. Ryotaro flexes his creative muscles through instrumentation and songwriting, spending a big chunk of his time strumming in R&B three-piece Izy.

The first time I heard his debut solo single, “Diamonds” (out today), it immediately reminded me of the feeling I experienced while watching Tom Misch’s Tiny Desk on NPR—a feeling of pure calm and relaxation where everything feels just right.

“Diamonds” is built on delectable bass licks and emphatic guitar chords with a jazz/soul lean. Ryotaro’s voice glides over the instruments like a puck on ice as he sings about facing challenges, dealing with pressure, and the idea that given time, each and every one of us has the potential to shine. Wordsmith Cazeaux O.S.L.O (Dominic Wagner) commands the second verse, giving the track a refreshing rap flavour as he similarly waxes lyrical about perseverance, digging deep through hardship and always being true to yourself. Powerful messaging that should forever be reiterated, if you ask me.

Shouts out to the array of other musicians who contributed to “Diamonds”: Hudson Whitlock (Surprise Chef) on drums, Darvid Thor (Karate Boogaloo), and the high-flying flute courtesy of Nikodimos.

Find that healing patch of morning sun and pop this one on. It will do you all sorts of favours.
