What you might not know is that it’s also the year one of the smoothest, most sensual house bops landed: “My Love Turns To Liquid” by New York trio Dream 2 Science. Made up of Ben Cenac (Cozmo D), Gregg Fore (G4 aka Busta Fhott), and Yvette Cenac (Lady E aka Vai Cee), the group bottled something special that still holds up 36 years on.
Igniting with a water droplet SFX, pads that sound like a day spa and a pungent bass riff, the track has you in its clutches, instantly. These three elements together form the essence of the word “groove”. Then, a whispered “liquid” lyric introduces vocalist Vai Cee, effortlessly singing about love rushing through her as she craves someone in particular. You can hear the thirst in Vai’s delivery, unashamed in her urges.
“Just touch me gently, and my love will show…that I’m yearning to feel you.”
The track’s design makes it feel as though Dream 2 Science have cast a spell, dissolving the emotion into sound and rhythm. I feel like the tempo of this record should be studied; it’s in the pocket, unrelenting, calm yet also party. Although it was fabulously reissued on vinyl by Rush Hour in 2012, Dream 2 Science is a trio most likely trapped in the digital streaming weeds– let’s set them free.
