Ever feel lucky when idly scrolling your streaming platform of choice?
As if an artist has timed a release just for you. Although I’d been expecting this one, it still landed like that yesterday, when Jump Source (the joint project of Priori and Patrick Holland) dropped their maiden album, Fold (via NAFF Recordings).
Before the LP, Jump Source carved out space thanks to a tidy run of EPs, minimal, dub-leaning, and delicately composed. Gripping stuff, if that sort of thing’s up your alley.
Fold feels like a conscientious crossover, proof that their collective powers appeal to mainstream listeners. Each cut brings it owns flavour, the record drifting from vocally-powered dance joints into dustier pop and slower introspections as we near curtains.
The album is doused with features, each one doing wonders for its respective track. My pick of the bunch is with Dutch singer-songwriter BEA1991 on “Endlessly.”
From the opening note, there’s buzz and bounce – BEA’s cantations falling in line with rubbery synths, words seeping through circuitry. The singer’s robotic delivery gives way to hooky bursts of falsetto. Club programming plays the groom, pop diction the bride – a flexible tune bred to lift spirits and limbs.
While “Endlessly” is the horse I’m backing, make sure you spin Fold one through eleven. These two Canadians are weapons behind the desk, operators with an aptitude for elevation. Beyond their own records, the likes of James K., Car Culture, Maara and Tiga have called on them to help refine and push their tracks into new realms.
