There’s an ocean of Dream Pop out there…but something about Freya McKee’s “Blue” sticks its head above the crowd.
“Blue” is an honest exploration into the rough patches of relationships and resulting feelings of isolation. Scuttling drums and perky guitar chords meld wonderfully as Freya laments about the weight of having to try and front up when things with a loved one just aren’t right.
The narrative is drenched in depression “You said the air would fix my sorrow but I still feel nothing inside” yet the production carries an air of hope and possibility for change. At the end of the day, isn’t that all we’re looking for…a way out of the misery? Cleverly, Freya uses the colour blue as a powerful symbol of melancholy contrasting vulnerability with the facade of emotional strength.
The accompanying video is beautiful too, shot in Japan with her partner Jordi James, Freya tells her tale across crop fields, bustling cityscapes and woodlands dotted with adorable deers.
