“Flawless” began on a plane.
other joe (Joe Buchan) can’t remember where he was headed or where he’d come from, but he does recall having just seen fellow Australian Cousin (Jackson Fester) DJ:
“It was a forest-y venue somewhere on the outskirts of Berlin. I remember trying to make something that he would’ve played in that set.”
Fast forward to Christmas Eve, and Joe’s kicking it at his folks’ place in Melbourne when he feels the urge to crack open his laptop and jump back into the sandpit, so to speak.
All good things take time, and finishing “Flawless” took its fair share. Funnily enough, it was Jackson who had access to the earliest iterations of the demo. “He liked it, which felt kismet and was playing it a bit in the one and a half years between germination and finished product.”
The final version stands out. If it were a criminal in a lineup, even a witness who’d only caught a glimpse of the perpetrator would pick them out instantly. Straight out the gate, there’s a palpable atmosphere. The very first bass notes are reminiscent of a healthy heartbeat – surrounded by underwater synths, bell chimes and shuffling drum strikes. As it rolls on, Joe brews an electric storm, introducing glitches that remind me of a computer crashing out.
“Flawless” feels alive, moving between inhalation and exhalation. Joe knows exactly when to tighten the rope and when to let it loosen, repeating the motion over and over. I’ve been to the New York Ballet a handful of times since moving to the city, and the energy those dancers conjure between one another feels reminiscent of what Joe has created.
“It’s largely a 16-bar loop, but every element is always moving, being modulated using filter or delay parameters…I actually beatboxed the initial drum idea – you can still hear lots of my original voice memo in the tune, just flanged and filtered beyond recognition.”
When the ideas for “Flawless” first surfaced, Joe was in the midst of a party phase. A last hurrah of debauchery at clubs and festivals across Europe before returning home to Australia to start a full-time job.
“I had this three-month holiday before my contract started to do some young and reckless stuff..everything had this kind of sepia tone to it – you ever know you’re going to be nostalgic for something while it’s happening? Every place I visited felt alive with friendships and possibilities.”
Though “Flawless” leans ambient, there’s a real vigour running through it too. No doubt a byproduct of all the chugging, bass-heavy music Joe was sponging up across the EU. I did what I always do and looped the track while writing. The more it played, the more this feeling of “everything’s going to be okay” settled over me. Like, whatever madness is waiting around the bend, I’ll face it head-on.
Speaking on this idea, Joe says:
“The harmony of this song has this hopefulness that I think correlates with how that European summer felt to me. The last summer before I had to grow up. A lot of my music can be quite brooding, whereas this one has a sanguine quality.”
And if music should accomplish anything at all, it should be to inspire hope and possibility. Bliss out to “Flawless” below.
