#6 THE CONTESTANT

Director | Clair Titley

Country | UK

This incredible true story follows a man who spent 15 months trapped inside a small room, naked, starving, and alone, completely unaware that his life was being broadcast on national TV in Japan to over 15 million viewers each week.

Although it might seem hilarious at first glance, the reality of Nasubi’s ordeal is cruel and disheartening, shedding light on the extreme measures taken for entertainment. The game show footage is captivating, but what happens afterward is even more compelling. Nasubi’s resilience and extraordinary character shine through strongly. It was great to see a standing ovation for him when he walked out to a packed State Theatre. It’s an astonishing story that serves as a poignant commentary on the ethics of reality TV and the lengths to which people will go for entertainment.

#7 PROBLEMISTA

Director | Julio Torres

Country | USA

In this quirky comedy, an aspiring toy designer (Julio Torres) faces the expiration of his work visa, leaving him with no choice but to take a job assisting an erratic art-world outcast (Tilda Swinton).

This unique setup offers a few laughs and showcases creative heart and originality. However, it doesn’t quite resonate. It’s got offbeat charm and an inventive spirit but the humour and story failed to make an impact. There’s a frustrating tone that lingers throughout, making it difficult to fully engage with the characters and their journey. Props must go to its unique and creative vision though.

#8 A DIFFERENT MAN

Director | Aaron Schimberg

Country | USA

Aspiring actor Edward (Sebastian Stan) undergoes a radical medical procedure to drastically transform his appearance. His dream face soon becomes a nightmare as he loses out on the role he was born to play and becomes obsessed with reclaiming what was lost.

Intriguing throughout. You never lose interest, though it’s not entirely captivating. The comedic moments are well-executed and provide good laughs, while the anxious sound design keeps the tension high. Despite its dark tone and mysterious elements, it can feel a bit distant at times. Overall, it’s a distinctive piece of filmmaking that blends humor with a sense of unease.

#9 THE MONK AND THE GUN

Director | Pawo Choyning Dorji

Country | Bhutan

In 2006, modernisation reaches Bhutan, the last country to connect to the internet and embrace democracy. Authorities organise a mock election to teach voting, but locals remain sceptical. In rural Bhutan, where religion trumps politics, an election supervisor learns of a monk planning a mysterious ceremony for election day.

What an absolute delight. It’s a beautiful film offering a fascinating look into Bhutanese culture through engaging storylines and rich characters. Its warm lighthearted tone makes it a real joy to watch but it also has moments of tension that are handled brilliantly. The cinematography is a real beauty too. Also, ripping on American gun culture is always welcomed. This one comes highly recommended.

#10 THERE’S STILL TOMORROW

Director | Paola Cortellesi

Country | Italy

In post-war Italy, Delia (Paola Cortellesi) is a typical housewife whose family is in turmoil over the impending engagement of her beloved firstborn, Marcella (Romana Maggiora Vergano). A mysterious letter ignites Delia’s courage to confront her abusive husband and imagine a better future.

The first five stars of the fest. Filmmaking at its finest. Confident in execution, it seamlessly blends humor with tension, and boy does it get tense. It keeps you on edge for the majority of the film, as if walking a tightrope. The subject matter is handled with style and grace, yet it doesn’t shy away from the harsh realities. It’s an emotional rollercoaster, often feeling like one step forward and two steps back, testing your emotions at every turn. Paola Cortellesi delivers a powerhouse performance, both in front of and behind the camera. A truly tremendous film that is unexpected in the most beautiful and impactful way.
