Today’s the day, masterful selector Moopie (Matthew Xue) joins TROVE. Hailing from Melbourne/Naarm, Moopie steers the A Colourful Storm ship, an imprint who’ve released bits and pieces for the likes of Klon Dump, Vladimir Ivkovic and Valentina Magaletti.

Revered as a touring DJ in his own right, Moopie is known to share the controls with close pals such as Ben UFO, Vlada, and Amaliah. This well-dressed fellow has crafted sets all over this pale blue dot we call home from Magnetic Fields Festival in the North West Indian desert to Love International in Croatia and Wildeburg in the Netherlands.

Without further adieu, let’s get a taste of Moopie’s tastes. If you vibe the tunes, be sure to support the artists who put them together! This is TROVE 009.

1. Ghostbusters | “Cleaner”

These kinds of delicate rhythm tracks are great for starting a set, though I can see this one working perfectly at peak time too.

2. Mark Ambrose | “Bassoon”

I’ve been playing a lot of Mark Ambrose’s tracks lately. This one has all the hallmarks: tough percussion, warm bass and a beautifully subtle melody.

3. Freddie Fresh & Tim Taylor | “The Penguin/Scissorhands”

This is probably the one that’s been responsible for the biggest crowd responses lately. The fade-out around the 5-minute mark works wonders on a big sound system.

4. Zagc | “003”

Wild and clever track that I’d play when transitioning from faster techno stuff to jungle or drum’n’bass.

5. City Kudu | “Pala”

Contemporary jungle and drum’n’bass often sound too austere to my ears, so I  appreciate it when I hear something more playful. I love the interplay between the percussion and the vocal and melodic samples in this one.
